Introduction

Theconstructionindustryisincreasinglyapplyingbuildinginformationmodelingmethodstotheprocess

ofdesign,procurement,construction,operationandmaintenanceoffacilities.Inorderforbuilding

informationmodelstosharedata,theyemployschemasthatdefinethestructurefortheinformation

thattheyprocess.

Aschemarequiresaconsistentsetof‘names’oftheentitiesitisorganizing,inordertowork.Names

couldrefertoaparticularconstruction(e.g.walltype1),system(e.g.lowvoltageelectricalsupply),

material,propertysetorindividualproperty,forexample.Eachofthesenamesshouldhaveacontrolled

definitionthatdescribeswhatitmeansandtheunitsinwhichitmaybeexpressed.Havingacontrolled

vocabularyofconstructionterminologyisessentialtosupportinterpretabledataexchange.

Perhapsevenmoreimportantly,namesofthingsmaybeusedmorewidelytosupportknowledge

applicationandmanagementinconnectionwithBIM.Forinstance,buildingcodesalsorefertoitemsby

name(bothintermsofaconcept,andattributesorpropertiesthataconceptmaypossess).

Specifications,productdatasheets,costingschedules,andreferencestandardsareallexamplesofdata

whichcouldbebetterintegratedwithacommonvocabulary.

A‘Dictionary’isusedtodefinenames.ADictionaryofconstructionterminologydefinestheuseofa

particular‘name’(type,propertyetc.)inaconsistentmanner,regardlessofwhoisusingtheschemaand

whereitmaybeused.Sinceconstructionisaglobalindustry,terminologydictionariesneedto

accommodatedifferentlanguages;thatis,differentnamesforthesamethings.Withinalanguage,there
