FailandRidgenearClevedon,AvonCounty,fromobservationsmadeduringtheconstructionoftheM5

Motorway.

Aglacialcol-gullyabout100mwideandapproximately25mdeepisdescribed.Thecol-gully,eroded

throughtheCarboniferousLimestone,opensanddeepensnorthward.AssociatedwiththeColandthe

col-gullyisacomplexsequenceofQuaternarydeposits.Uppermostinthesequenceisalayerofredsandy

silt(coversand)approximately0.5mthick,ofperiglacialorigin,probablyofDevensian(Weichselian)

age.Largelyconfinedtothecol-gullyareunstratifiedtills,stratifiedice-contactdepositsandglacio-

lacustrinedeltaicdeposits.Theglaciogenicdepositsareupto25mthick.Bouldersofabout8Mginweight

havebeenobserved.
