ThisreportpresentstheresultsoftheofficialUnitedNationsestimatesandprojectionsofurbanizationfor237countriesandareasoftheworldandforover12,000urbansettlementswith50,000inhabitantsormorein2025,aspublishedintheWorldUrbanizationProspects2025.ThedatainthisrevisionareconsistentwiththetotalpopulationsofcountriesandareasestimatedandprojectedaccordingtothemediumvariantoftheWorldPopulationProspects2024.ThisrevisionupdatesandsupersedesthepreviousestimatesandprojectionsofurbanizationandcitypopulationspublishedbytheUnitedNations.

The2025revisioncontinuesthePopulationDivision’slong-standingefforttoproviderigorousandinternationallycomparableevidenceonthechangingdistributionoftheworld’spopulationacrosscities,townsandruralareas.Earliereditionswerebasedondatareportedbynationalstatisticalauthoritiesaccordingtocountry-specificdefinitions.
