Canadaisabilingualcountrywithco-officiallanguages.EnglishandFrenchenjoyequalstatusastheofficiallanguagesofthecountry.Thismeansthatthepublichastherighttocommunicatewithandreceiveservicesfromfederal(联邦的)governmentinstitutionsineitherEnglishorFrench.Federalgovernmentemployeeshavetherighttoworkintheofficiallanguageoftheirchoiceinbilingualregions.

LiketheUnitedStates,Canadastartedasacolony.Beginninginthe1500s,itwaspartofNewFrancebutlaterbecameaBritishcolonyaftertheSevenYearsWar.Asaresult,theCanadiangovernmentofficiallyrecognizedthelanguagesofbothcolonizers:FranceandEngland.TheConstitution(宪法)Actof1867legallyacceptstheuseofbothlanguagesinfederalcourts.Yearslater,CanadastrengtheneditscommitmenttobilingualismwhenitpassedtheOfficialLanguagesActof1969,whichrestatedtheconstitutionaloriginsofitsco-officiallanguagesandsetouttheprotectionsaffordedbyitsdual-languagestatus.

RecognitionofbothEnglishandFrenchprotectstherightsofallCanadians.Amongotherbenefits,the1969ActrecognizedthatCanadiancitizensshouldbeabletoaccessfederallawsandgovernmentdocuments,whethertheirnativelanguagewasFrenchorEnglish.Thegenerallawalsorequiresthatconsumerproductsfeaturebilingualpackagingthroughoutthecountry.

TheCanadianfederalgovernmentiscommittedtoadvancingtheequalityofstatusanduseoftheEnglishandFrenchlanguages.withinCanadiansociety.However,therealityisthatsomeCanadiansspeakEnglish,andofcourse,someCanadiansspeaktheotherlanguageentirely.Althoughthefederalgovernmenttheoreticallyguaranteesbilingualservicesinallareas,therearemanyregionsofCanadawhereEnglishistheclearmajoritylanguage,sothelocalgovernmentdoesnotalwaysseekservicesinFrenchinthoseregions.Canadiansusethephrasewh
