chemicals.AnestimateofthispotentialmayusuallybeobtainedbytheuseofprogramCHETAH7.0

tocomputethemaximumenergyofreactionofthechemicalormixtureofchemicals.2

Theexpression“hazardpotential”asusedbythiscommitteeisde?nedasthedegreeof

susceptibilityofmaterialtoignitionorreleaseofenergyundervaryingenvironmentalconditions.

Theprimarypurposeofthistestmethodistodetectenthalpicchangesandtoapproximatethe

temperatureofinitiationandenthalpies(heats)oftheseevents.Differentialscanningcalorimetryoffers

theadvantageofusingverysmallspecimensontheorderofafewmilligrams.

1.Scope

1.1Thistestmethodcoverstheascertainmentofthepres-

enceofenthalpicchangesinatestspecimen,usingminimum

quantitiesofmaterial,approximatesthetemperatureatwhich

theseenthalpicchangesoccuranddeterminestheirenthalpies

(heats)usingdifferentialscanningcalorimetryorpressure

differentialscanningcalorimetry.

slurries.
