Approach416interviewswereconductedonlinewiththoseworkingintheoilbusiness.ParticipantswererecruitedviaemailinvitationfromalistprovidedbytheSocietyofPetroleumEngineers(SPE),publishersoftheJournalofPetroleumTechnology(JPT).EmaillistwascompiledfromSPEmembershipinformation,aswellasemailscollectedbySPEthroughothercontactswiththoseintheoilbusiness(e.g.,attendeesofSPE-sponsoredtradeshows).Operatingcompaniesratherthanserviceandsupplyweretargeted.Invitationswere“blind”,meaningSPEwasnotidentifiedasthesponsorofthestudy.EmailsweresamplesoastoachieveroughlyequalnumbersofSPEmembersandnon-members 209memberand207non-memberinterviewswerecompleted 78%ofnon-membersampleself-identifiedinthesurveyasSPEmembers BecausethetrueratioofSPEmemberstonon-memberswithinthetargetaudienceisunknown, resultsarenotweightedandpresentedastotal.Membersandnon-members(asidentifiedbySPE) arebrokenoutseparatelyintheappendix.RespondentswereenteredinadrawingforaniPaduponcompletionofthestudy.ThedrawingwasadministeredandfulfilledbySPE,whoinaccordancewithCASROregulations,wasrevealedasstudysponsoruponrequestattheconclusionoftheresearch.
