Policiesthatsetagelimitsonsocialmediaaccessandrestrictdevicesduringschooltominimizedisturbancecanbehelpfulbutareincompletesolutions.Socialmediadidn’tinventbullies(霸凌)ortheenormouseffectofpeerpressure.Socialmediaplatformsmaybeanewbattleground,buttheyarenotthesource.Unfortunately,manycurrentpoliciesignoretheneedtoteachkidshowtomanagethesechallenges.Thereisfrighteninglylittleattentionpaidtopreparingkidstomakegooddecisionswhentheywill,unavoidably,getonline.

Onthebrightside,therapiddevelopmentofAIandincreasingattentiontotheamountofmisinformationonlinehavehelpednormalizetheacceptanceofmedialiteracyasacoreskill.Whilesuggestionstolimitinappropriatedeviceuse,increaseface-to-facesocializing,andengageinoutdoorplayarebeneficial,theydonotbuildthecoreskillsthatwillkeepkidssafeofflineandarefundamentaltowell-beingandlifesuccess:goodcitizenship,self-awarenessandself-control.Thosethingstaketeaching,whetheryouareonlineoroutside.
