Acculturationisthewaypeopleadapttoanewculture.TheSchumanntheoryonacculturationismainlybasedoffthesocialfactorsexperiencedbythoselearningEnglishastheirsecondlanguagewithinthemainstreamculture.Thefactorsdeterminethesocialdistancebetweenthesecondlanguagelearnerandthemainstreamcultureinwhichtheyarelivingin.Thisdistancebetweenthelearnerandthemainstreamcultureinturndeterminetherateoflanguageacquisition.Schumannstatesthat“thedegreetowhichalearneracculturatestothetargetlanguagegroupwillcontrolthedegreetowhichheacquiresthesecondlanguage”(pg.34).

【研究领域】语言文化适应与二语习得【重大贡献】语言文化适应模式Acculturation【研究成果及评价】1.Schumann.J.(1978a,1978b)研究了一个名叫Alberto的哥斯达黎加人移居美国后的英语学习情况,根据研究结果提出了语言文化适应模式。按照这种模式,语言文化适应是二语习得的一个因变量。也就是说,在二语习得中,二语习得者在自然环境下的学习结果受学习者适应目标语社团程度的影响。文化移入过程是个体逐渐接受一个新团体的信念价值和文化的过程,可能涉及到大量的社会和心理变量。Schumann.J.认为社会距离对学习者获取语言输入信息有重要影响。如果学习者在心理上或在社会上远离目的语群体,便不容易获得目的语输入。Acculturation

Whenpeoplefromoneculturemoveintoanareadominatedbyanotherculturetherearegoingtobechangesoradaptationsmadebypeopleonbothsides.Thenon-majorityculturewillbemakingmostofthesechanges.Duringthisacculturationprocesstherewillinevitablybeaspectsofthenativeculturethatwillbelost.Althoughitwillnotbeasdrasticordamagingasassimilation,theeffectscannotbeavoided(Berry,2008).

AcculturationAnotherpossiblecritiqueisthatstudentswhomaintaintheircultureinasocietythatisdominatedbyadifferentculturemayfeelalienatedfromothers.Thiscouldleadtopoorself-esteemandothersocialdifficulties.
