Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts, a descendant of a long line of Puritan ancestors including John Hathorne, a presiding magistrate in the Salem witch trials. After his father was lost at sea when Nathaniel was only four, his mother became overly protective and pushed him toward relatively isolated pursuits. Hawthornes childhood left him overly shy and bookish, which molded his life as a writer.? Nathaniel Hawthorne is considered to be the first greatest American fiction writer in the moralistic tradition. His work The Scarlet Letter is notable for its allegory and symbolism, so it is regarded as the first symbolic novel in American literature. The novel revolves around one major symbol: the scarlet letter. Besides, some other objects that are described in the novel have their symbolic meanings. Moreover, the names of the four major characters: Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth and Pearl also have their symbolic meanings. The Scarlet Letter is a novel of much symbolic. Throughout the whole novel, symbolism plays a very important role. Especially, the scarlet letter is endowed with a symbolic meaning. Symbolism in literature is the deepness and hidden meaning in a piece of work. It is often used to represent a moral or religious belief or value. It is a literary movement that cruse in France in the last half of the 19th century and influenced many English writers, particularly poets of the 20th Century. They work through emotionally powerful symbols that suggest mood. The thesis focuses on various kinds of symbolisms in the novel. II. The Symbolisms of The Scarlet Letter A. In the novel, the red flame is converted into the scarlet letter?“A”, symbolizing the original sin, the permanent punishment of Christianity and the purification of spirit.?“A”, the first letter of the alphabet, means beginning.
