Novell Identity and Access Management solutions automate the management of user identities throughout the lifecycle. A new hire can be productive her first day on the job, and IT staff and line-of-business managers dont have to spend their time managing changes to user accounts. Our solutions make most account changes an automatic response to a single event. For example, a major event in the user lifecycle, such as hiring, triggers automatic workflows and provisioning that occur with little to no human intervention, based on roles and policy. In the case of a new hire, the HR manager would create a new profile for the user in an HR system like PeopleSoft, SAP or Lawson. The profile would include information like the employee’s name, contact information, user id, manager and other details. This process of creating a new employee profile would kick off a workflow process, allowing the employee’s manager to specify to which systems, applications and resources the employee will need access based on her role. This can include e-mail, a CRM system, the HR system, a time management system, mainframe applications and anything else. The employee will also need assets—like a badge for access to the building, an office, a laptop, phone, mobile device and even a company credit card—so she can be productive on her first day. On her first day, the employee would log in to the network for the first time using the user id generated by the HR system and a temporary password. At this point, she’d be asked to reset her password via a self-service interface. In addition to setting a new password, the system would require her to set up a challenge question and response that she can use to reset her password when company policies dictate, or if she forgets her password at some point in the future. The self-service functionality requires no intervention from the IT department, freeing them up to work on other strategic projects. If the employee is promoted or changes roles, a single upd
