Languages of all nations contain a lot of words denoting animals and so do Chinese and English. Animals play an important role in human lives. Human beings and animals are both the products of natural evolution, and factually man had evolved from animals. But since human beings created language, there have existed some great differences between man and animals. Language, a product of human labor and social activities, is perculiar to mankind which is the major factor that distinguishes human beings from animals.??With the development of the society animal words gradually obtain their established connotations in all languages, that is, people associate their feelings and emotions, even happenings and natural phenomena with various animals which are thought to represent different characters like people, or serve as omens. Many animals have become a kind of symbol in people’s thinking, and this symbol is reflected in the language. In recent years, many linguists, as Deng Yanchang, He Ziran, Hu Wenzhong, have paid much attention to cross?--cultural communication. They devoted much to pragmatics, comparison of languages and cultures between English and Chinese. They also published many papers on the comparison of animal words in the two languages. But there are only a few papers on systematic comparison of cultural connotations of animal words in English and Chinese. This paper makes a detailed comparison of connotations of animal words in the two languages in terms of cultural communication and the reasons about connotational differences of animal words between Chinese and English.II.
