IntroductionIn China, almost everyone knows these words:?“When a monk lives alone, he has water to drink as he himself has to solve the problem; When two monks live together, they help each other to carry water; But when three monks live together, they have no water to drink.” The reason they have no water to drink is that they don’t cooperate. Cooperation, is working together to accomplish shared goals.????? Cooperative learning is an old educational view and practice. In our China, it began as early as 2000 years ago when the famous educational masterpiece Xue Ji says:?“Studying alone leads to ignorance and being ill-informed.”1 It advocates that students should study together and share their knowledge each other to increase learning efficiency, and it also shows that the individual is benefited from the study by mutual discussion. Cooperative learning emerged early in 1970s in America, then got a substantial development from middle in 1970s to middle in 1980s. It is a teaching theory and a structured systematic instructional strategy in which students work together in small groups toward a common goal. Following the educational innovation, the traditional approach to English teaching and learning has been repeatedly found inferior to instruction that involves cooperative learning. Cooperative learning is an important way to English learning in modern education and it plays up to the need of innovation. It gives a structure for providing content support for students of different English levels. It gives students opportunities to learn from one another rather than receiving information from the teacher or text alone, and stimulates students to high-level thinking and help English learners develop the language skills.
