In daily life people should learn not only how to say language but also how to communicate with others. When one has the need to get in touch with another person, communication is bound to occur. Compliment is one of the most widely used speech acts both in China and English-speaking countries when communicate with others. It is often used to greet, encourage, thank and to start a conversation. The appropriate use of complimentary words would be beneficial to the effectiveness of communication and the establishment of the formal social relationship.The structure character of compliment is the language behavior which is constructed by adjacency pair. From the point of social behavior, compliment shows the value judge, evaluation, appreciation and praise in the everyday social intercourse, which reflects the value standard of social culture from contents, formulas and responses of compliments?.From these three aspects the thesis distinguishes the differences between English and Chinese compliments and responses, aiming at improving cross-cultural communications and avoiding cultural conflicts.II. The Different Contents of Chinese and English ComplimentsCompliment is a value judge with common sense as a behavior of language intercourse and it overtly shows the feelings of evaluation, praise, appreciation and admiration towards people and things. Compliment not only reflects certain social value concept, but also has the function to encourage people.
