Introduction1.1 The origin of the communicative teaching approach?The origin of the communicative teaching approach may be traced back to the 1960s. At that time, the competitive teaching methods dominated foreign language teaching in England. The teaching methods, which had been formed earlier, included the traditional teaching method, the direct approach and the audio-lingual approach. They shared a common ground, that is, to require the students to focus merely on the language structure. Upon the deficiencies of these teaching approaches, many linguists in Britain started to seek for more effective teaching approaches to take their places then. They came to realize that more attention should be paid to training the students communicative competence, rather than merely grasping the language structure.In 1965, American linguist Norm Chomsky proposed that, we must identify the differences between the language ability and the language behavior when we study the language. According to his viewpoint, if people had already possessed the senior language competence, they might compose the infinite sentence. But in opposite, American anthropologist D.Hymes gave the definition of the communicative competence. He held that the communicative competence involved the latent language knowledge and the ability, including social gathering. The communicative competence uses the language knowledge spots which we have studied in order to carry on the communication in various situations and the different person effectively and correctly. He pointed out that whether a person grasps the language well or bad, is not decided merely in making many conforms to the grammar sentences, also decided by the ability whether he can utilize the language correctly.
