IntroductionTense, which is a very important grammatical category, is one of the most controversial grammatical problems in English grammar. Traditionally, the English tenses are confined to the angle of pure time and appear many different views. In recent years, the attention to the English tenses has another theoretical approach. There are two types: multi—tense category and bi-tense category. I support bi-tense category. This thesis consists of three chapters: The first chapter gives the meanings of the English tenses. The second chapter compares the traditional English tense. In the last chapter, on the basis of the new definitions of the English tenses, the pragmatic functions of the English tenses are explored.2. Meanings of English Tenses2.1 Definition of English TenseTense，which has long been studied by linguists，is defined as grammar any of forms of a verb that may be used to indicate the time of action or state which happens and exists.
