It can be regarded as a?“communicative skill’. In a second language context, such as the situation in China where English is learned as a foreign language by overwhelming majority of people all over the country, writing or learning to write in English is commonly considered as an advanced and demanding requirement that is added to the complexities inherent in trying to master English. For more than a decade, students and teachers have been trying, to their wits’ end, to meet the requirement of college entrance examination. Unfortunately, the results are far from being satisfactory, only a small amount of students has actually developed the level of English writing skills, while the larger part of students is still frustrated. Throughout the years, different theories have offered direction on how to teach writing. After the product-focused approach was mostly discredited, it was supplanted by the more interactive and dynamic process and genre approach. But each of them has their own disadvantages, so it is urgent to find some methods to suit the current foreign language writing situation. II. Problems in Writing for English Learners? As far as most people are concerned, writing is rather bothering, because writing, as Bell and Burnday point out, is an extremely complex cognitive activity in which the writer is required to demonstrate control of a number of variables simultaneously. At the sentence level these include the control of content, format, sentence structure, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling and letter for motion. Beyond the sentence, the writer must be able to structure and integrate information into cohesive and coherent paragraphs and texts.
