University of Toronto, Human Development and Applied Psychology) Abstract: Prior studies have shown that inversion would disrupt the processing of face configural information (i.e., the spatial relations between facial features). The present study further examined whether the face inversion would show the same interference in the horizontal and the vertical configural information processing. In order to do so, we presented participants pairs of faces, one of which was the target face, while the other was the altered face, which had different configural information from the target face. The altered face’s horizontal or vertical configural information was changed at five levels (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 pixels). Participants were required to decide whether these two faces were the same person. By comparing the identity discrimination accuracy in upright and inverted faces pairs, we examined whether the size of the inversion interference was comparable between the horizontal and the vertical configuration altered faces. In Experiment 1, the horizontal configuration was manipulated by varied the inter-ocular distance wider or closer, while the vertical configuration was manipulated by moving eyes up or down. In Experiment 2， we manipulated the vertical configuration between mouth and nose.
