LIAO Yun, LI Rongtao (Faculty of Life Science and Technology, Kunming University of Science and Technology) Abstract: Bauhinia variegata L. which belongs to the family Leguminosae, distributes in the south part of China, such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Yunnan provinces. This plant has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of stomach disease and lung disease in Yunnan province. Previously, several components including flavonoids, terpenoids and alkaloids were reported from the rhizomes and stems of B. variegata, but no phytochemical study on the flowers of this plant has been reported. In order to discover more secondary metabolites with potential bioactivities and novel structures, we investigated the flowers of B. variegate collected from Yunnan Province of China. Systematic phytochemical investigation of this plant led to the isolation of eight known compounds, Isoliquiritigenin (1), Naringenin (2), Kaempferol (3), Kaempferol-7-O-β-D-glucopy-ranoside (4), aempferol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), Caffeic acid (6), (-)-Catechin (7), and 2 Kaempferol-3-O-L-rhamnopyranoside (8). Compounds 1 and 4 were isolated from this plant for the first time.
