Abstract Vanity Fair is the masterpiece of William Makepeace Thackeray who is one of the most famous critical realistic novelists in the mid 19th century in England. The story in this novel is developing according to the experience of the traditional woman Amelia Sedley and the non-traditional woman Rebecca Becky Sharp. They are quite vivid and impressive female characters in Thackeray’s age. Vanity Fair represents profoundly the society of London in the Victorian age. Through the contrasting lives of the two heroines, Thackeray shows his admiration and sympathy for women in a money-oriented and status-conscious male world and attacks a corrupted, hypocritical society which advocates the Victorian virtues of marriage and family. Based on a close reading of the novel, and by the method of character analysis and comparison, this thesis will study values of love of the two heroines in Vanity Fair.
