摘要 本文选取了Triumph of the Nomads: A History of Ancient Australia(revised edition) 的序言和第一、二章作为翻译文本，此文本属于历史文本。历史学是一门 独特的人文学科，它的研究范畴之广，对研究者的要求慎严，对译者的要求更甚。 德国翻译理论家沃尔特·本雅明曾经为译者这一特殊群体著文，他的《译者的任 务》一文被解构主义学派奉为解构主义翻译理论的重要奠基文献，是 20 世纪翻 译界一股新鲜的思潮。他提出了“纯语言”的概念，指出译者的任务就是在自己 的语言中将“纯语言”从另一种语言的魔咒中释放出来，他阐述了原作与译作、 忠实与自由的关系。 笔者以节译部分的翻译为例，对上述问题进行了论述和反思。原作不应该具 有至高无上的地位，译作也不应该完全服从于原作，它们处于平等的地位。相应 地，译者也应该和作者平起平坐，而读者的地位可能因为文本的类型不同而有所 不同。在翻译过程中，忠实与自由并不对立，译者应该对原文做出尽可能忠实的 解读，而同时可以根据社会、语言、文化因素做适当的自由发挥。对于历史文本 来说，译者要有解放“纯语言”的能力，即通晓中英文差异、驾驭中西方文化的 能力，应该尽量向作者靠近，并且平衡好忠实和自由的关系。 关键词：译者的任务 历史文本 原作 译作 忠实 ii ABSTRACT The preface as well as the first and second chapters of Triumph of the Nomads: A History of Ancient Australia (revised edition) were chosen in this paper as the text for translation, which is a historical text. History is unique among the humanities. As it covers a wide range of knowledge, it sets high standards for the researchers and the translation of the historical texts is even more demanding. Walter Benjamin, a German translation theorist, ever wrote an article The Task of the Translator for the translators. The article was considered by the deconstruction school as an important article for the deconstructive translation theories and it represented a fresh trend in the translation field in the 20th century. He raised the concept of “pure language”, pointed out that the task of the translator was to release in his own language that pure language which was under the spell of another and discussed the relationship between the original text and the translated text, between fidelity and freedom. The author discusses and rethinks his views based on the translation examples of the selected text. The translated text should not submit to the original text. They are in equal status.
