Obj ective To find out about the current situation of the human assisted reproduction technolo y ( ART) in China so as to provide basis for the formulation of relevant policies. Methods Investi ations were conduct ed by means of epidemiolo ical and sociolo ical surveys. Results By the end of 1999, the number of institutions de liverin IVF reached 70 or so and some other institutions were startin to or preparin to start to deliver it. However, the number of ART centers that were bi in scale was very limited and the rate of complications of pre nancy via IVF was much hi her than that of natural pre nancy. In addition, there were problems in the control of sperm, ovum, and impre nated ovum and many issues of ethicality and laws and re ulations remained to be resolved in deliverin ART. Overdevelopment of the technolo y resulted mainly from the drive for profits. Conclusion It is extremely ur ent to stren then control of ART . In particular, reat attention must be paid to the safety of the IVF technolo y. Also, more efforts need to be made to speed up the formulation of relevant laws and re ulations concernin ART.
