Not only does the play have an interesting story to tell, the characters and the plot offer the audience opportunities to relate to issues such as justice and mercy, which has always fascinated both writers and their public. The main characters of this play are Shylock, Antonio, Bassanio, and Portia. In the reading part, we will read part of the play that happens in the court: Shylock sues the merchant Antonio for failure to repay a loan that Antonio had contracted on behalf of his friend Bassanio. The two must resolve their situation in court. Portia goes to the courtroom disguised as a lawyer to defend Antonio from Shylock’s demands. Teaching aims: Ask the students to read and act out the play in the class to recall this story. Meanwhile, try to remember and master some useful phrases and sentence structures and enhance student’s ability to appreciate plays.
