I Abstract The advantages of industrial clusters originate from integrating the inside and outside resource of clusters and the efficiency of collective action. China's industrial clusters are still in a primary stage of development. In order to strengthen their competitiveness, developing trade associations is an urgent task. Firstly, this thesis adopts the new system economics and city society theory to explain the reasons for the existence of trade associations. The analysis is carried out with realistic demand as well, such as government institutional reform and global economy integration. The functions of the associations are to provide service, to strengthen self-discipline, to represent the cluster’s benefit and to integrate resource. Secondly, drawing on evolutionary game analyzing, it concludes that trade associations can strengthen internal trust within an industry cluster, can provide the club products at lower costs, and can fight against "free rider" problem to defend the public products. Thirdly, it describes the development issues and existing problems of trade associations in Guangdong province. Two cases are studied to prove it, which are Chaozhou Ceramics Industry Association and Dongguan Taiwan Businessmen Association. Based on these analyses, it brings forward some constructive suggestions on how to develop China’s trade associations. Key words: trade association, industrial cluster, evolutionary game II
