Abstract Hydrometeorshavedominanteffectontheperformanceofsystemsoperatingat frequenciesaboveIOGHz,andtheremotesensingofhydrometeorsisanimportant subjectforradiopropagation,radarmeteorologyandatmospherephysicsetc.Basedon thephysicscharacteristicsofrainfall,fogandclouds,thepropagationcharacteristics andremotesensingofhydrometeorsareinvestigatedanddiscussed.Themain contributionsofauthorsworkareasfollows: Basedonthemeasureddataofraindropsizedistribution(DSD),theaveragerain DSDmodelsinQingdao,GuangzhouandXinxiangareobtained.UsingtheDSD modelsandforwardscatteringamplitudecomputedbytheleastsquaresfittingmethod, thespecificattenuationsat1-400GHzhavebeencomputedandanalyzed,the parametersofpowerlawrelationbetweenspecificattenuationandrainfallrateare obtained.ThespecificattenuationsinQingdao,GuangzhouandXinxiangarecompared withITU-Rspecificrainattenuationmodels.Theanalyticspecificattenuationmodelfor rainforuseinpredictionmethodsaredeveloped,thespecificrainattenuations calculatedbytheanalyticmodelareinhighagreementwiththosebytheparameters tabulatedinITU-Rmodel,thismodelhaspresentedtoITU-Rasaproposedrevisionto currentITU-Rmodel.Thepredictionmethodsofrainattenuationfordesignof terrestrialandearth-spacesystemsarealsointroduced. Basedonthetheoryofrain-inducedrain-inducedcross-polarizationdiscrimination (XPD),thetwo-ordersmallargumentapproximationforrain-inducedXPDisdeveloped, andanewmodelforpredictingrain-inducedXPD isproposedbasedonthis approximation.Thecomparisonsofthisnewmodelwithothermodelsandexperiments datashowthatsomeimprovementhasbeenobtainedwiththismodel,especiallyfor differentpolarizations. Basedonraindropsizedistribution(DSD)datameasuredinQingdao,Guangzhou andXinxiang,theradarreflectivityfactorZforsphericalraindrops,theradar reflectivityfactorZHanddifferentialreflectivityZDRforoblateellipsoidraindrops havebeencalculated.Therelationofreflectivityandrainfallrateforconventional meteorol
