Textbook review English writing is the most difficult course to learn in college. So, a good book is necessary for us. This year our teachers have chosen the textbook for us, so we needn’t to spend a lot of time on seeking for the appropriate book by ourselves. Now, I want to say something about my textbook. My text book is called Refining Composition Skills, is written by some foreigners and published by the Dalian University of Technology Press in 2006. As a whole, I think that this book is useful for me to study English writing because of its contents, layout and exercises. The first point is the content. It is clearly organized and graded, that means it is sequenced by difficulty. In this way I can feel easier and have more confidence to continue studying. And also, there are enough authentic reading materials so that I can see that the book is relevant to real life. At the same time, most of the materials this book provided are interesting, I never feel boring when I was reading it. My book also does well in encouraging me to develop my own learning strategies, and the recommended methods and approaches are suitable for me. I feel that I have made a big progress in English writing. But I think there is a disadvantage in this book. That is its lack of enough communicative activities to enable me to learn by myself. That makes the book fit for course in college but not for self-taught. Fortunately, I have a teacher of writing course, and then I can avoid this disadvantage. The next point is the layout of this book. There is an introduction before each unit, it’s written in Chinese, shows the main teaching point in each unit. The texts are all written in English, it provides me an environment of English. Another good point on layout is that this book combines text and exercise together. It can help me to review immediately and memorize better. The last point is the exercise in this book. This book provides enough exercise for me to make confirmation of my study.
