Colin has been raking the leaves for hours. 2. can be used to describe an event, activity or situation that began in the past and ended only a short time ago. John has been playing the guitar all morning, and now his fingers hurt. 3. is often used to answer the questions How long? or Since when? I have been teaching English since 1963. Paul has been speaking English for five years. Some verbs are not used in the present perfect progressive tense. These are the stative verbs that do not describe motion or activity: be / have (possess) / hear / know / like / love / prefer / recognize / see / suppose / understand / want / wish These verbs are used in the present perfect simple, not the progressive. Joey has known Janice since 1989. (not has been knowing) The present perfect progressive tense answers the questions How long? and Since when?, but not How many/much?
