China Institute of U rban Planning and Design, Shenzhen Branch, Shenzhen 51 000, China) Abstract: Based on the index of urban population, the hinterland and dynamic changes of Zhumadian city w ere studied w ith urban system analysis package( U SAP) 1. 0. It is concluded that the present size of Zhumadian city is obviously small and less attractive w ith the hinterland being less than half of its administrative region; w ith the populations of adjacent cities unchanged, the hinterland of Zhumadian city w ould extend to as large as its administrative range when its population reaches 550 000. Consider ing the development of those surrounding cities, the hinterland of Zhumadian city would be the same size of its administrative range only w hen the population reaches 1. 5 times of the average level of the adjacent six cities; the movement of the urban center of Zhumadian city w ill influence the extension of its hinterland; moving southward is expected to be better than moving northw ard; the improvement of regional transportation will reduce the hinterland area of Zhumadian city.
