Based on the data collected throu h documentary research and field observation, land use chan e in Dalian city has display ed an important feature betw een 1996 and 2005, that is the decline of cultivated land and unused land, the increase of constructed land. T hen the drivin forces of land use chan e in Dalian City w as analyzed. On the basis of the study , the dr ivin mechanism of land use chan e in coastal cities w as pr oposed, w hich is the outer drivin mechanism ( spacialtemporal effects drivin ) and the inner drivin mechanism ( naturehuman drivin ) , and their relationship betw een each other. It is nec essary to use the thou ht of system w hen the drivin force and drivin mechanism of land use chan e is studied, so that the macro and meso analysis could combine w ith micro analysis in some area and achieve the combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
