Abstract: The major progresses of t he global tectonics and st ructural geology in the last 10 years are review ed. The new global tec
tonics that emerged three decades ago profoundly changed our understanding of the earth and its evolut ion. Plate tectonics as a uni
fying theory of the earth mainly is connected with deformat ion, seismicity and volcanism w ithin plate boundaries. No comprehen
sive theory accounts satisfactorily for the driven force of plate mot ion and mechanism of mantle convection. Many of the problems
of plate boundary formation and interplate formation remain unansw ered. Continental lithosphere is significantly
