Text: Packaging Types Packaging is the science, art, and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use. Packaging also refers to the process of design, evaluation, and production of packages. Packaging can be described as a coordinated system of preparing goods for transport, warehousing, logistics, sale, and end use. Packaging Types There are two basic kinds of packages: the industrial package and the consumer package. *Industrial packaging is also known as the exterior package. The primary objective of industrial packaging is protection. The products already are sold, hence the purchaser demands that the goods arrive in safe, usable form. Logistical considerations also play a major role in industrial packaging. Industrial packaging also is related to the grouping or combining of individual products into larger packages. These larger packages, called “master cartons” or “containers,” represent exterior considerations and serve as protective devices for movement, handling, and storage activities. *Consumer packaging is also referred to as the interior, or marketing package, because it is what the customer sees when the product is on the shelf. It is designed to appeal to and inform the final customer. These two types of packaging, industrial and consumer, differ in terms of their primary objectives, but they are not mutually exclusive. For example, package design must be concerned with both exterior as well as interior considerations. Protection also is basic to both types.
