The most accepted definition of the third party logistics is from the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) in American. It defines the term as outsourcing all or much of a companys logistics operations to a specialized company. It is a kind of logistics service provider expert in logistics industry and capable of professional handling of goods. The functions of 3PL cover all the aspects of logistics. 3PL (Third Party Logistics) is a kind of business mode inside which a specialized logistics company provides logistics service to both supplier and demander. In business, 3PL has a broad meaning that can be applied to any service contract that involves storing or shipping things. A 3PL service may be a single service such as transportation or warehouse storage or it can be a system-wide bundle of services capable of managing the entire supply chain. The term 3PL was originally coined to differentiate logistic providers who used the Internet to enhance their services from those that did not. 2.11.1.2 The functions of 3PL The functions of 3PL cover all the aspects of logistics. One of its functions is as a one-step distribution center, warehousing, trucking and shipping documentation for the client. Together with the flow of goods, the information flows simultaneously. A 3PL company not only provides service to the local manufacturers, but also to the overseas cargo buyers.
