Provide librarians with an understanding of the nature of and the requirements for a successful cooperative organization or project. Approach: a very brief overview of the history of two library cooperative organizations in the United States followed by a case study of the creation of a cooperative library networking project relating to standardized cataloging practices which the author organized and led. A bibliography will provide sources of more detailed information as well as the basis of the overview. Research limitation: The paper will not give a comprehensive history of library cooperative organizations or standards, nor will the bibliography provide references to highly detailed information on this subject. Practical implications/value: For small libraries with limited budgets participation in cooperative organizations greatly helps to bring them into the 21st century.
