The Infinitely Suffering Thing: ———T. S. Eliot’s “Preludes”   Abstract: this article explicates how Eliot’s subjects in his “Preludes” struggle between the loss of language in the modern reality and the impossibility to attain the idealistic state of love and meaning. The subject in these short poems, in the Poet’s modernistic depiction, turns out to be the failed version of the Renaissance man or the one that loses spirituality in the eyes of the Romantics, thus envisaging the doomed state of modern humanity at the turn of the twentieth century.
