Abstract: Closely related to people s life experience, t he associati e meanings of a language often directly or indirectly reflect a
language group s culture alues, produce communicati e alue and add specific feelings to the words. The basic color w ords in
English and Chinese with similar conceptual meanings ha e different associati e meanings due to their respecti e specific history
and culture. A com parati e analy sis of the associati e meanings of such color w ords helps to enhance the understanding of the
language itself and impro e language learners intercultural communicati e compet ence.
