Recognising the challenges and nature of the project, and in order to minimise the risk of ‘failure to obtain acceptance’; the authors have developed an approach based upon ‘Progressive Assurance’. Progressive Assurance provides the continual development of the argument that the system has met, or is on track to meet, its requirements through the provision of objective evidence, commensurate with the stage in the project. In this manner technical acceptance is gained in a controlled and progressive manner. The East London Line Project is entering the implementation phase with the appointment of contracts for detailed design, implementation, installation, integration and acceptance. This paper describes the use of Progressive Assurance on the East London Line Project in the organisation of existing engineering best practice into a coherent, rational and pragmatic structure to provide, amongst other attributes, a clear statement of acceptance criteria defined and approved early in the project lifecycle.
