ABSTRACT
For several years Amtrak has had excellent aerial survey based 3-dimensional data giving track
centerline coordinates at approximately 5.0 meter intervals along all of its surface tracks. Software has
recently been developed for relatively optimal and automated analysis of the track coordinate data to
obtain vertical curves, grade lines, and horizontal curves that provide good fits to the coordinate data.
This paper describes the manner in which Track Shape Use LLC is processing track coordinate data
for Amtrak, discusses some of the challenges that have been encountered, and provides examples of the
results.
INTRODUCTION
In a paper (Klauder, 2004) presented at Railway Engineering – 2004 (the previous meeting of this
conference) the author described a procedure for fitting either traditional or improved spiral geometry to
existing track shapes with emphasis on track shapes inferred from offsets measured by tamping
machines and on use of the fitted geometry for control of tamping.
After reviewing the material in that paper, some engineers at Amtrak (the organization that operates
most of the intercity passenger trains in the United States) asked whether the software used to obtain
curve radii and spiral transition points for control of tamping might be used to obtain similar information
from a large body of track centerline coordinate data that Amtrak had obtained for all of its tracks visible
from the air
