How Stuart Hall Defines Culture

Abstract: Stuart Hall, known as the Father of Cultural Studies,has contributed greatly to the basic the-
ories of Cultural Studies, which can mainly bereflected by his redefining culture. By following Hoggart
and Williamscultural materialism and by introducing some key words of Cultural Studies such as dis-
course, power, subject, and difference, Hall defines culture as representation and signifying practices.
Actually, Halls answer to the definition of culture is very different from others, and has constructed
the theoretical basis of Cultural Studies.
