Methods Forty-five patients w ith pulmonary interstitial fibrosis w ere randomly divided into tw o groups, the treated group ( n= 0) received ginkgo biloba extract 1 g, three times a day; the control group received prednisone 0 mg, once a day, the therapeutic course for both groups w as months. Changes of clinical symptoms, pulmonary function, arteri- al partial pressure of oxygen, computerized tomography ( CT ) , interleukin-6 ( IL-6) , interleukin-8 ( IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor-(TNF-) in the tw o groups w ere observed before and after treatment. Results The effi- cacy of treatment in the two groups showed insignificant difference, clinical symptoms, pulmonary function, ar- terial partial pressure of oxygen w ere improved after treatment ( P 005) , and the levels of IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-significantly decreased after treatment as compared w ith those before treatment in the tw o groups. The occurrence of pulmonary infection was less in the treated group than that in the control group (P 005) . Con- clusion Ginkgo is effective in treating pulmonary
