The results show ed that sedmi ent ofZhuzhou se tion had polluted se riously and pollutan t on en tration atX iaw an w as the h ighest among all samp les. The on entrations of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cd rea hed 4. 6~ 58. 8 tmi es higher than ba kground values of X iangjiang river, and 1. 7 1~ 1. 96 tmi es higher than the heavym etal values during the 1980s. There w ere on eviden e of N i and Cr pollu tion by evalua tion of the geoa umulation index. Cd w as the top pollutant and pollution level had rea hed highh ighest or the highest. The highest values of the heavy metals w ere found in the verti al se tion samp les bewt een 0 m and 50 m ex ept N i and Cr.
