Research supp orted in part by a Fannie and John Hertz Foundation fellow ship nayakpuhepprincetonedu y Research supp orted in part by DOE grant DEFGER WILCZEKIASSNSBITNET ABSTRACT By carefully considering a family of wave functions for Skyrmions in simple quantum Hall states whose memb ers are lab elled by a nonnegative integer and which prop erly generalizes the traditional Laughlin quasiparticle we argue that the spin of this particle has a fractional part related in a universal fashion to the prop erties of the bulk state and prop ose a direct exp erimental test of this claim We argue directly also for the fractional charge and fractional quantum statistics of these particles We show that certain spinsinglet quantum Hall states can b e understo o d as arising from primary p olarized states by Skyrmion condensation Almost years ago Skyrme intro duced a mo
