Chapter 4 Logistics Segment or
Warehouse Operation Receiing Actiity
and Concepts with a
WMS Program
Introduction
Receiving functions and dock areas are as important as storage and pick function areas. The
receiving dock is where everything in a warehouse starts. To ensure that a warehouse has an effi-
cient and cost-effective receiving dock, six elements are necessary: n A vendor vehicle dock schedule program. n A central office to control all receiving activities, including the printing of tally sheets and identification labels, and to ensure closure on orders and accurate communication with the WMS or host computer. n An identification for each SKU, to ensure that physical data sent to the WMS computer is accurate. n A project dock/door number and a method for bridging the dock edge and truck gap. n A large receiving staging. n A sufficient number of well-designed SKU travel paths from a receiving area to a storage area. A warehouse receives and unloads SKUs from vendor delivery trucks, ocean-going containers,
or rail cars. At a receiving operation, a vendor delivery vehicle is unloaded and received at the truck
receiving dock; a rail car is unloaded at the rail car receiving area. Each master carton or pallet 113

SKU receives an WMS identification and is sent from a receiving dock to a storage position. From
a receiving area, each SKU quantity is sent to a WMS computer or host computer for inventory
update. Receiving functions include assigning a delivery truck to a dock position or temporary hold-
ing yard , assigning a rail car to a spur location, and sending each identification and purchase
order to the WMS computer. Using a receiving dock permits a warehouse to handle a large num-
ber of vendor delivery trucks, ocean-going containers, and rail cars; to unload, sort, and stage a
greater SKU volume and flow through a fa
