Chapter 6 Storage Introduction In a warehouse with a WMS program, the storage actitivites begin with receipt of a SKU small item, master carton, or pallet. The item, master caron, or pallet is transported to a storage position. The SKU and storage scan transactions, position status, and SKU quantity, are sent to the WMS computer. The WMS computer update is the first step in tracking SKU flow, storage position occupancy in a warehouse, and SKUs available for pick transactions. Storage Design With a WMS Program: Objecties and Components When a storage plan is designed in conjunction with a WMS program, the design team will consider the factors that determine a warehouse’s ability to satisfy the objectives of controlling operational cost, earning a profit, and satisfying and increasing customers. In addition to ven- dor SKU and customer order flow considerations, major design considerations are facility design, activities needed to complete a storage transaction, WMS computer interface with a warehouse computer, storage location philosophy and practices, whether or not the warehouse uses an AS/ RS crane, carton handling, SKU WMS identification, SKU storage position type and identifica- tion, storage aisles, vehicles and vehicle routing patterns, SKU deposit activity, and transaction communication. Storage Put-Away: Functional Description After a WMS identification is placed onto a master carton or pallet, the master carton/pallet is ready for a move transaction see Figure 6.1 . In a conventional warehouse, a move transac- tion involves moving a SKU from a receiving dock to a storage position suggested by the WMS computer or selected by a forklift truck driver . In a computer-controlled or AS/RS storage opera- tion, each master carton, pallet, tray, or tote receives a profile check.
