Phrasal Verbs and Idioms to trust in something or someone 1) To rely on someone or something and to have confidence in it or them e.g.: when you take a cab in a foreign city, youve just got to trust in them. to trust to something or someone To leave something up to chance, that is, having the feeling that you or other people will have no effect on the outcome anyway, so you believe events will be decided by fate, luck etc e.g.: we sometimes trust to luck the results of our tests when we havent studied hard enough. to trust someone with something or someone To let someone or something look after something of yours, which could be a person or thing, because you believe that that person is trustworthy and that they will take good care of it e.g.: The babysitter we use is great and we really trust her with our little son. IDIOM: to be taken for a ride? To be swindled or hoodwinked in some way e.g.: the taxi driver drove me around the same block at least 3 times. He really tried to take me for a ride. BONUS IDIOM: hook, line and sinker To totally believe something because one is either too gullible or one has been deceived. Similar in that sense to the idiom above e.g.: So many people believe what they read in the press!! They swallow it all hook line and sinker! Grammar Blues Reporting with passive verbs: When reporting what people say or think and so on, we often use a passive structure, particularly if it isnt essential to state who is being reported: 1) Since the flood warnings were issued on the south coast, people in the area have been told to stay home. 2) Everyone was asked to bring their own drink to the barbeque.
