A part of thewhole surface de fect detection system was stud ied in the presentwork. A spreparation for the next step of defect detection, edge detection of an in pu tted mi age was perform ed to obtain the edge information of the mi age. Based on the mu lti scale and mu lti resolu tion charac teristics ofw avelet transform, an edge detection m ethod by comb ining w avelet transform w ith Canny operator was proposed to de tect the edge of the gear. F irstly, the mi age noisew as rem oved bym edian filtering. Then the haarw aveletw asused to extract the low frequency coefficient and reconstruct the mi age. Finally, the gear edgew as detected by using theCanny operator. The experi m entw as conducted based on the real mi age.
