A t h e o r y was developed for th e m a s s and energy balanco of microbial processes, with special reference to th e anaerobic production of m e t h a n e . Interrelation s of t h e bioengineering par am e t ers of t h e process were delineated s u b s t r a t e quality, b i o d e g r a d a b i l i t y and biological efficiency of anaerobic processing of complex organic waste substrates. A p p l i c a t i o n of the m e t h o d is d e m o n s t r a t e d on practical examples. The currently climbing energy prices are reflected in a number of areas in the effort to rationalize energy consumption and utilize secondary energy sources. In agriculture, superfluous wastes (slurry, manure, poultry droppings, etc.) may be processed anaerobically to yield CH4 which serves as an energy source. The efficiency of technology of CH4 manufacture depends on many factors such as technological conditions (pH, temperature, etc.), micro- organism, type of sabstrate and its quality, degradability, and such like.
