Abstract Abstract The relationship between processing of human facial expression and sex is a controversial issue in the study of face recognition. The researchers design a large number of experimental tasks for exploring the process is independence or interaction. Reviewing the findings of the previous studies, the authors found that the different chosen of materials would result in the different conclusion. Specifically, when happy and angry had been chosen, the result is significant interaction effects. When choose other expressions, the result is no significant. So there maybe is some special link between expression and sex. After reviewing the ecological literature, the authors found sex and facial expression both have ecological function. Based on the contradiction between the results of previous studies and the knowing of the affordance. So the design of two studies carried out as follows ： Study 1，based on the affordance management system model . 141 participants (77 male, 64 female) were asked to evaluate the facial expression which balance the gender factor , for explore the different affordances of the different expressions. Study 2, 129 participants (64 male, 65 female) were asked to finish face gender discrimination task that including 5 kinds of facial expressions (happiness, anger, disgust, fear, neutral) quickly. The dependent variable are reaction time and error rate. To explore whether the expressions that has different affordances effect sex recognition, and the characteristics of this influence. The results show that: Facial expression afford a certain level of affordance.
