November2010，Vo1．6，No．11(SerialNo．66) JournalofModernAccountingandAuditing，ISSN 1548—6583，USA Introductorycourseinaccounting—Factorsaffectingthechoice ofstudents’considerati0n Ath口ndS{0sM。mdilnsiD imitriosKourtidis2 HannisPetasaldsl fi．Departmenteraccountancy,KavalaInstituteofTechnology,Kava~65404．Greece 2 BusinessSchool，GlasgowCaledonianUniversity,GlasgowG4OBA，Scotland,UK) Abstract：Thisstudyattemptstoinvestigateifandhow students’perceptionsregardingthefirstaccounting courserelatedwiththeselectionofaccountingasamajor．Moreover,itexaminesstudents’initialperceptionsand courseperformanceregardingtheintroductory accounting course．Participantsinthisstudywere 120students from TechnologicalEducationalInstituteofKavala，SchoolofBusinessandEconomics(3departments)，who were asked to complete a survey instrument．The instrument used eleven statements regarding students’ perceptions(suchasdifficultyandmotivationofthecourse)ofthefirstaccountingcourse．Themainfactorsaffect students’decisionstofo1lowaccountingandseem tobesimilarwithotherresearchers’findings(Geiger Ogilby， 2000)．Futureresearchcouldbeusedlargersamplefromdifferentcountriesandthesurveycouldalsobeusedfor alongertimeperiod． Key words：introductory accounting course；students’perceptions；accounting profession；accounting ELtrricu1um 1．IntrOducti0n Variousstudieshaveinvestigatedaspectsoftheintroductory accountingcourse．ResearcherssuchasDoran Bouillon Smithf1991)，Eskew Faleyf1988)andWooten(1998)，examinedfactorsthatinfluencestudents’ performanceinthefirstaccountingcourse．Moreover,Buckless，LipeRavenscrofi(1991)examinedtheimpact ofgenderonaccounting courseperformance．Additionally，manyresearchershavediscussedontheappropriate contentofthefirstaccountingcourse(Baldwin Ingram，1991；Cherry Mintz，1996；Cherry Reckers，1983； Pincus，1997；Van—germeersch，1997)．M
