Abstract
Polyaminesplay importantrolesinplanttolerancetoenvironmentalstress.W iththeaim ofinvestigatingthepossible
involvementofputrescine(Put)insalt—tolerancemechanismsinvegetablesoybeanroots,exogenousPut(10mmolL)‘‘
anditsbiosyntheticinhibitorD-arginine(D—Arg)(0.5mmolL)wereaddedtonutrientsolutionwhenvegetablesoybean
(GlycinemaxL.cv.Huning95-1)seedlingswereexposedto100mmolL sodiumchloride(NaC1).Theresultsshowed
thatPutamelioratedbutD-ArgaggravatedthedetrimentaleffectsofNaC1onplantgrowthandbiomassproduction.Under
NaC1stress,levelsoffree,solubleconjugatedandinsolubleboundtypesofPutinrootsofvegetablesoybearlwerereduced,
whereasthoseofrfee,solubleconjugated,andinsolubleboundtypesofspermidine(Spd)andspermine(Spm)wereincreased.
ExogenousPuteliminatedthedecreaseinPutbutpromotedtheincreaseofSpdandSpm.However,thesechangescouldbe
reversedbyD—Arg.UnderNaC1srtess,activitiesofargininedecarboxylase(ADC),S-adenosylmethioninedecarboxylase
(SAMDC),diamineoxidase(DAO),andpolyamineoxidase(PAO)wereinduced,withexogenousPutpromotingandD-Arg
reversingthesechanges.Furthermore,NaC1stressdecreasedactivitiesofantioxidantenzymes.ExogenousPutalleviated
butD-ArgexaggeratedtheseeffectsofNaC1stress,resultinginthesamechangesinmembraned~ ageandreactiveoxygen
species(ROS)production.TheseresultsindicatedthatPutplaysapositiveroleinvegetablesoybeanrootsbyactivating
antioxidantenzymesandtherebyattenuatingoxidativedamage.
