Abstract
The compensation system of American faculty is concise in frame view. The main character
of the compensation system is its basic compensation, which dominates the whole compensation.
The compensation system is definitely affected by academic rank, type of university, proportion
of teaching and research affairs, the public-private difference and also, the gender difference. In
the recent years, the changing of occupation mix and collective bargaining in higher education
are the new trends to affect university compensation system. The compensation level of
American faculty has significant advantage when it compare with either middle class family’ or
American secondary and elementary teachers’. Despite the average compensation of American
faculty is only about 70% of their colleagues’ who working outside higher education system,
American universities have adopted a special policy which standard is meet or above the market
compensation standard to employ some qualified faculty who are in high market needs field.
Thus at the largest extension, this compensation policy ensure American universities have more
competitive in external to hire highly qualified faculty. In the view of compensation payment
system, the Contract Salary System CSS and Single Salary Schedule SSS are the main two salary
payment systems in American higher education system, this two salary payment system reflect
from different point of view the difference value judgment in American higher education
compensation system. In the meanwhile, the American faculty compensation management
mainly based on the management of faculty classification, that is, different types of faculty
correspond to different compensation. This
