Lafleureta1．ForestEcosystems ForestEcosystems DOI10．1186／s40663—015-0027—6 自Sn}iBgerOpen 》《{n } stingthedevelopmentofborealpaludified inresponsetoclimatechange：acase studyusingOntarioecositeclassification BenoitLafleur， NicolejFenton andYvesBergeron Abstract Background：Successionalpaludification，adynamicprocessthatIeadstotheformationofpeatlands，isinfluenced byclimaticfactorsandsitefeaturessuchassufficialdepositsandsolItexture．1nborealregionsprojectedclimate changeandcorrespondingmodificationsinnaturaIfireregimesareexpectedtoinfluencethepaludification processandforestdevelopment．TheobjectiveofthisstudywastoforecastthedevelopmentofboreaIpaludified forestsinnortheasternNorthAmericainrelationtoc1imatechangeandmodificationsinthenaturalfireregimefor theperiod2011—2100． Methods：Apaludificationindexwasbuiltusingstatic(e．g．surficiaIdepositsandsolItexture)anddynamic(e．g． moistureregimeandsoiIorganiclayerthickness)standscalefactorsavailablefr0m forestmaps．Theindexconsidered theeffectsofthreetemperatureincreasescenarios(i．e．+1。C，+3。Cand+6。C)andproqressivelydecreasinqfirecycle (from 300yearsfor2011—2O41，to200yearsfor2071—21O。)onpeataccumulationrateandsolIorganicIayer(SOL) thicknessatthestandIeve1andpaludificationattheIandscapelevel Results：0urindexshow thatinthecontextwhereintheabsenceoffiretheIandscapecontinuestopaIudicy,the negativeeffectofclimatechangeonpeataccumulationresultedinlittlemodlficationtoSOLthicknessatthestand level，andnochangeinthepaludificatione『vefofthestudyareabetween2011and2100．Howeverincluding decreasingfirecycletotheindexresultedindeclinesinpaludifiedarea．Overall，theindexpredictsaslighttomoderate decreaseintheareacoveredbypaIudifiedforestsin2100withslowerratesof0aludification
